Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña was named American League Player of the Week on Monday after homering in three straight games to open the week and finishing with a two-homer performance on Sunday.
It’s the first Player of the Week honor of Peña’s career and the fourth for an Astros player this season, joining three separate wins by Yordan Alvarez earlier this season. Peña is the first Astros infielder to earn the award since Alex Bregman in August 2024. He shares this week’s honors with Washington’s CJ Abrams, who claimed the National League award after a six-game hitting streak and five home runs of his own.
Peña extended his hitting streak to eight games during the week. Since returning from a calf injury on July 10, he has hit .419 with five home runs, helping lift his season OPS to .877 with 11 homers in just 59 games.
Those numbers have come despite two separate injury absences this season, including roughly a month on the injured list with a hamstring strain and another nine-game absence in late June and early July. His recent surge has quickly reestablished him as one of the Astros’ most productive hitters.
The honor also reflects Peña’s importance to Houston’s lineup. Since returning from injury, he has helped spark an offense that has climbed back into the AL West race while rediscovering the production that made him one of the American League’s top shortstops earlier in the season.
With Peña now joining Yordan Alvarez as an Astros Player of the Week winner this season, Houston continues to receive standout performances from the core of a lineup that has fueled its push back into the division race.
