Cam Smith, Christian Walker Named Gold Glove Finalists
The Houston Astros may be watching the postseason from home, but two players are receiving recognition for their defensive performances in 2026.
Right fielder Cam Smith and first baseman Christian Walker have been named finalists for the American League Rawlings Gold Glove Awards, giving Houston an opportunity to add two more defensive honors to the franchise’s history.
For Smith, the nomination represents another milestone in a promising young career. For Walker, it offers an opportunity to claim a fourth Gold Glove after establishing himself as one of baseball’s premier defensive first basemen during his years with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Both players face strong competition, but their nominations provide some welcome recognition following an Astros season that ended with an 81-81 record and a Wild Card Series elimination.
Cam Smith Earns Second Consecutive Nomination
At just 23 years old, Smith has been named a Gold Glove finalist in each of his first two Major League seasons, an impressive accomplishment for a player who transitioned to the outfield early in his professional career.
Smith led Major League Baseball with 157 appearances in right field during the 2026 season, demonstrating both his durability and the Astros’ reliance on his defense.
He led American League right fielders with 294 putouts and ranked second in fielding percentage (.981) and innings played (1,259⅔). His defensive range was another strength, with Smith ranking among the league’s leading right fielders in Outs Above Average.
Smith faces competition from Boston’s Wilyer Abreu and Toronto’s Nathan Lukes.
Abreu, a two-time Gold Glove winner, recorded 28 Defensive Runs Saved in 2026, the highest total of any Major League player. Lukes also distinguished himself with his throwing arm, ranking among the American League’s leaders in outfield assists.
A victory for Smith would make him just the fourth outfielder in Astros history to win a Gold Glove Award, joining César Cedeño, Michael Bourn, and Kyle Tucker.
For a young player still developing offensively, the recognition provides further evidence of his value to Houston beyond what he contributes at the plate. His transition to right field has become an important part of the Astros’ defensive identity.
Walker Seeks Fourth Gold Glove
Walker enters the competition with considerably more experience, having won three consecutive National League Gold Glove Awards with Arizona from 2022 through 2024.
The 35-year-old continued to provide Houston with reliable defense at first base in 2026, finishing with an American League-leading .997 fielding percentage and opening the season with 121 consecutive errorless games.
Walker also tied for first among AL first basemen in Fielding Run Value (7), ranked second in Outs Above Average (3), and finished third in Defensive Runs Saved (3).
He faces Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Kansas City’s Vinnie Pasquantino for the award.
Guerrero, who won a Gold Glove in 2022, enjoyed one of the strongest defensive seasons of his career. Pasquantino also improved defensively in 2026 and is seeking his first Gold Glove.
A victory would give Walker four career awards, tying him for the most among active Major League first basemen.
He would also become just the third Houston first baseman to receive the honor, joining Jeff Bagwell, who won in 1994, and Yuli Gurriel, who won in 2021.
Walker’s nomination comes after a season in which his offensive consistency remained a concern. His defensive performance, however, continued to provide value regardless of his production at the plate.
How Gold Glove Winners Are Selected
The Rawlings Gold Glove Awards recognize the top defensive players at each position in both the American and National Leagues.
Winners at the nine traditional positions are determined through voting by Major League managers and coaches, accounting for approximately 75% of the selection process. The remaining 25% comes from the SABR Defensive Index, which evaluates defensive performance using statistical measurements.
Managers and coaches cannot vote for players on their own teams.
Smith and Walker are Houston’s only finalists this year, but their nominations give the Astros an opportunity to celebrate individual accomplishments following a disappointing conclusion to the season.
For Smith, winning would mark a significant early-career achievement. For Walker, it would add another honor to an established defensive résumé and make him the first Astros first baseman to win the award since Gurriel.
The 2026 Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners will be announced Sunday, November 1, at 7:30 p.m. CT, during a special edition of Baseball Tonight on ESPN.
