When trade deadline discussions heat up, it’s easy to focus on what a contender needs to acquire. It’s harder to recognize the value of the players already filling those roles. AJ Blubaugh is becoming one of those players, and the Astros should be careful not to overlook just how important he’s become.
Back in February, we asked a simple question: Could AJ Blubaugh Become the Astros’ Most Valuable Pitcher in 2026? The argument wasn’t that he would lead the team in wins or saves. It was that he possessed something increasingly rare in today’s game: the ability to thrive in almost any role. Five months later, that prediction is looking increasingly accurate.
Friday night’s comeback victory over the White Sox may have been the best example yet. After Spencer Arrighetti exited in the first inning with right foot nerve irritation, Houston’s game could have unraveled. Instead, Blubaugh entered and delivered two scoreless innings, preventing the deficit from growing until the Astros erupted for eight runs in the sixth. Christian Walker’s bases-clearing double and Cam Smith’s go-ahead home run will deservedly receive the headlines, but neither moment happens if Blubaugh doesn’t first keep Houston within striking distance.
That performance also underscored why Blubaugh has become such a valuable piece of Houston’s pitching staff. The Astros have spent much of the past two seasons navigating injuries throughout their rotation. Hunter Brown has worked his way back from an extended absence. Ronel Blanco is returning from Tommy John surgery. Arrighetti’s status is now uncertain after Friday’s early exit. Every one of those situations increases the value of a pitcher capable of covering multiple innings on short notice without compromising the rest of the bullpen.
Blubaugh isn’t simply another reliever. He can bridge from an injured starter to the back end of the bullpen, absorb innings when a starter is on a pitch count, or make a spot start if necessary. Few pitchers on Houston’s staff can realistically fill all three roles, making his versatility one of the club’s quiet competitive advantages. Those contributions don’t always show up in traditional statistics, but they often determine whether a team has a chance to mount a comeback instead of watching a game slip away.
The appeal of including Blubaugh in a trade package is obvious. He’s 26 years old, inexpensive, under club control, and pitching well enough to attract interest from other organizations. Those are precisely the types of players contenders often have to surrender to acquire established talent. The question, however, isn’t whether Blubaugh has trade value. He clearly does. The question is whether Houston can realistically replace what he already provides.
Every contender has stars. The teams that survive a 162-game season also have pitchers capable of preventing one bad inning from becoming one bad week. Those pitchers rarely make All-Star teams, but they frequently determine whether clubs can withstand the inevitable injuries and bullpen strain that accumulate over six months. Blubaugh has quietly become one of those pitchers for Houston.
None of this makes him untouchable. If another club values Blubaugh enough to build a package around a controllable frontline starter, the Astros should absolutely listen. Trading him simply because he has value, however, risks creating another hole on a pitching staff that has already spent much of the season patching others.
Five months ago, we wondered whether AJ Blubaugh could quietly become one of the Astros’ most valuable pitchers. The six-man rotation we envisioned never became the defining storyline of Houston’s season, but the importance of a flexible, dependable arm only grew as injuries mounted.
