The Houston Astros placed starter Spencer Arrighetti on the 15-day injured list Saturday with right foot nerve irritation, a day after he exited his start against the White Sox before the second inning. Houston recalled left-hander Bryan King from Triple-A Sugar Land to fill the open roster spot.
Arrighetti said the issue was located between the third and fourth toes on his right foot and that he hadn’t felt anything like it before Friday, when he believes he first strained the area warming up. He allowed three runs on 33 pitches in the first inning before the pain worsened enough to end his outing.
“It was really bothering me,” Arrighetti said, describing how the pain intensified when he tried to warm up for the second inning.
King had been optioned to Sugar Land last weekend after allowing five home runs over a four-outing stretch, and his immediate recall was made possible by the corresponding move of a pitcher going on the injured list. He carries a 3.40 ERA across 42 appearances with Houston this season.
Arrighetti had posted a 1.34 ERA over his first eight starts this season and earned American League pitcher of the month honors in May, but he carries an 8.34 ERA over his past nine outings. With Hayden Wesneski nearing a return from Tommy John surgery and Ronel Blanco recently back from the injured list, Arrighetti’s placement on the IL may ease a growing logjam in Houston’s rotation picture ahead of the August 3 trade deadline.
