Major League Baseball will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks Friday with on-field tributes, community service projects, and special programming throughout the league.
Players, managers, coaches, and umpires will wear special New Era caps featuring a “We Shall Not Forget” side patch. The Blue Jays will wear caps displaying both the Canadian and American flags, while the Yankees and Mets will wear first responder caps during Friday night’s Subway Series game at Yankee Stadium.
Tributes Across Major League Baseball
Each ballpark will feature customized base jewels and official lineup cards commemorating the anniversary. Home teams will hold a moment of silence, show an MLB Network-produced scoreboard tribute, and feature a rendition of “God Bless America” during the seventh-inning stretch.
MLB and the Mets will also host a meal-packing event Friday at Citi Field in partnership with the nonprofit 9/11 Day as part of MLB’s UNITE for Good initiative.
Former Mets Mike Piazza, David Wright, Al Leiter, John Franco, Robin Ventura, Todd Zeile, Adam Ottavino, and Dellin Betances are scheduled to participate, along with MLB Network’s Harold Reynolds, MLB and Mets staff, college baseball and softball players, and community volunteers. Together, they will pack thousands of meals for families in the New York tri-state area.
Remembering Baseball’s Role After 9/11
MLB Network is also commemorating the anniversary with “When America Took the Field,” a two-hour documentary examining baseball’s role in the weeks after the attacks.
The documentary premiered Thursday and will air again Friday at 9 p.m. CT, Saturday at 9 a.m. CT, and Sunday at 7 p.m. CT. It will also stream on MLB.TV and MLB+ and become available on demand Monday.
The commemorations will take place at every MLB game Friday, including the Astros’ series opener against the Rays at 6:10 p.m. CT.
