Jose Altuve added another milestone to an already extraordinary career Wednesday night in Philadelphia, collecting his 2,500th major-league hit.
Now comes the inevitable question: Could he get to 3,000?
Altuve reached 2,500 with a third-inning double off Phillies left-hander Cristopher Sánchez, driving a first-pitch sinker into center field at Citizens Bank Park. The hit came in Altuve’s 2,095th career game and made him only the second player in Astros history to reach the milestone.
Craig Biggio, with 3,060 career hits, remains the only other Astro to get there.
An Exclusive Club
Altuve became the 102nd player in AL/NL history to record 2,500 hits, according to MLB. Even more impressive, only 31 players reached the milestone in fewer games. Altuve did it in exactly as many games as Ted Williams.
Among active players, the company is even smaller. Only Altuve and Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman have reached 2,500. Freeman crossed the threshold earlier this season.
Altuve’s résumé already includes three batting titles, nine All-Star selections, seven Silver Slugger Awards, a Gold Glove, the 2017 American League MVP Award, the 2019 ALCS MVP Award, and two World Series championships.
And he has spent all 16 of his major-league seasons with Houston.
Is 3,000 Within Reach?
Five hundred hits is still a long way to go, particularly for a player who turned 36 in May. But Altuve is under contract with Houston through the 2029 season, giving him three more full seasons after this one to make a run at one of baseball’s most celebrated milestones.
The math is challenging.
Altuve is on pace to finish this season with approximately 2,515 career hits. That would leave him 485 shy of 3,000 entering 2027, meaning he would need to average about 162 hits over each of the final three seasons of his contract.
Only 12 players in AL/NL history have collected at least 485 hits during their age-37 through age-39 seasons. One of them was Biggio.
That doesn’t make 3,000 inevitable—or even easy. Age, health, playing time, and performance will all determine whether it becomes a realistic destination rather than simply an intriguing possibility.
But 2,500 puts it close enough to start watching.
Already an Astros Legend
Whether Altuve ever reaches 3,000 will not determine his place in Astros history.
He debuted with Houston in 2011, endured three consecutive 100-loss seasons, and remained long enough to become one of the central figures in the most successful era the franchise has ever known.
Now he joins Biggio as the only Astros to accumulate 2,500 hits. Biggio’s franchise record of 3,060 remains 560 away, another enormous climb if Altuve is going to challenge it.
Wednesday’s milestone also came in characteristically Altuve fashion. His teammates applauded from the dugout and bullpen, and Phillies infielders Trea Turner and Luis Arraez congratulated him at second base. Altuve acknowledged the moment before the game continued.
There will be plenty of time to debate whether 3,000 is attainable. For now, 2,500 is worth appreciating on its own.
