The Houston Astros have purchased the contract of shortstop Drew Wyers from the Trenton Thunder, adding another standout from this year’s MLB Draft League season, the league announced. He’s the second Draft League player to have his contract purchased by a major league club this season and the 16th since the league adopted its professional, second-half format in 2022.
Wyers, 23, appeared in 15 games for Trenton, hitting .281 with a .432 on-base percentage and an .877 OPS, while recording nine RBIs and nine runs scored. His production spiked in the second half of the Draft League season, when he slashed .533/.650/.867 with a 1.517 OPS. His stint included a four-hit game on July 19 against Williamsport that featured his lone Draft League home run, a grand slam.
A Columbus, New Jersey native, Wyers joined Trenton, his hometown-area team, after finishing his college career at Mississippi State, where he hit .333 with four home runs and 16 RBIs over 33 games this past season. Before that, he earned 2025 America East Player of the Year honors at Bryant after batting .407, a mark that ranked 10th nationally, while posting a .521 on-base percentage, .710 slugging percentage, and 1.231 OPS.
Wyers is the second position player to have his contract purchased during the Draft League’s second-half professional season, following Casey Yamauchi, whom the Athletics acquired from Frederick in 2023. He’s also the second Astros pickup out of this year’s Draft League season, joining right-hander Carson Estridge out of West Virginia.
The signing continues Houston’s active scouting of the Draft League, where the Astros have now purchased the contracts of both Wyers and Estridge this season. The league also enjoyed another productive year overall, producing 58 selections in the 2026 MLB Draft and increasing its all-time totals to 291 draft picks and more than 200 undrafted free agent signings.
