Yordan Alvarez was named the American League’s Player of the Month for July on Monday after another dominant month at the plate, Major League Baseball announced.
Alvarez hit .360 in July with 9 home runs, 22 RBIs, and a 1.188 OPS, leading all qualified American League hitters in OPS while ranking among the league’s top offensive performers throughout the month. It’s his second Player of the Month honor of the season, having also won the award in April after hitting .356 with 12 home runs.
The month opened with a signature moment. On July 4, Alvarez homered twice and drove in six runs in a 10-8 win over Tampa Bay, capping the night with a walk-off two-run shot in the ninth that snapped the Rays’ nine-game winning streak. It marked the second time in his career he’d hit a walk-off homer on Independence Day, making him the only player in major-league history to do it twice, following an earlier walk-off blast against Kansas City in 2022. Teammate Jose Altuve, who was on base for both of Alvarez’s homers that night, put it plainly: “He can beat you with a single, or a homer.”
The award is the latest milestone in a season that has seen Alvarez lead the majors in all three Triple Crown categories for extended stretches. He enters August hitting .324 with 35 home runs and 82 RBIs, while also coming off an American League Player of the Week honor in early July. Alvarez remains the centerpiece of a Houston lineup that has carried the Astros to first place in the AL West.
Washington’s CJ Abrams won the National League Player of the Month Award after hitting .348 with 10 home runs, 23 RBIs, and a 1.150 OPS in July.
