On a Monday that brings the Dodgers to Daikin Park and plenty of uncertainty about what this Astros team can be in 2026, Major League Baseball offered a reminder of just how good the best player in Houston can be. Yordan Alvarez has been named the American League Player of the Month for March/April, MLB announced Monday.
It is the third time Alvarez has won the award, having previously claimed it in June 2022 and September 2023. He also earned AL Player of the Week honors for the week of March 30 through April 5, the fourth such award of his career.
The numbers behind the honor are staggering. Over the season’s first month, Alvarez batted .356 with 12 home runs, 27 RBIs, nine doubles, and a 1.199 OPS. He led all of baseball in OPS, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, hits, and total bases, while tying for the major league lead in home runs.
For a team that has leaned heavily on its offense to compensate for a pitching staff ravaged by injuries, Alvarez has been more than a bright spot—he has been the engine. The Astros lead the majors in runs scored, and no single reason explains that more than the man hitting second in their lineup every night.
What makes the month even more remarkable is that Alvarez has done it without missing a game, something that has not always been a given in his career. He has played in all 35 of Houston’s games, providing a consistency that has been as valuable as the production itself.
Awards are a snapshot, not a solution. The Astros still have questions to answer, especially on the mound. But for a month, Alvarez has given them something solid to build around — not just production, but presence. In a season that has already tested their depth, that has mattered as much as anything.
