The Houston Astros re-signed infielder Braden Shewmake to a minor-league contract Friday and assigned him to Triple-A Sugar Land, the team announced.
Shewmake appeared in 30 major-league games for Houston earlier this season, hitting .256 with a .272 on-base percentage and a .423 slugging percentage. Houston needed his roster spot on July 10 to bring Jeremy Peña back from a calf injury, so Shewmake was designated for assignment and traded to the Milwaukee Brewers for cash considerations two days later.
His stay in Milwaukee was brief. Shewmake appeared in just four games before the Brewers designated him for assignment as well. After clearing waivers, he elected free agency rather than accept an outright assignment to Triple-A, allowing him to sign with another organization.
Houston quickly brought him back, signing him to a new minor-league deal and assigning him to Triple-A Sugar Land. Familiar with the organization and capable of playing multiple infield positions, Shewmake gives the Astros experienced depth as they head into the final two months of the season and remains a ready option should the club need another infield call-up.
