Ten years ago Saturday, the Houston Astros completed a trade that has become one of the most consequential in franchise history, acquiring 19-year-old prospect Yordan Alvarez from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for veteran reliever Josh Fields.
At the time, the move drew skepticism from many Astros fans. Fields had been a dependable reliever in Houston’s bullpen, while Alvarez had yet to appear in a professional game after signing with the Dodgers only weeks earlier.
A decade later, the deal stands as one of the defining moves of the Astros’ sustained run of success.
“I don’t think anyone is going to tell you when we traded for Yordan that we thought he would be what he is, the most dangerous hitter in baseball,” former Astros director of pro scouting Kevin Goldstein told MLB.com. “We certainly saw a really big guy with a whole lot of tools.”
Houston had pursued Alvarez before he signed with Los Angeles but lacked the international bonus pool money to complete a deal. When the Dodgers approached the Astros about acquiring Fields, senior scouting advisor Charlie Gonzalez immediately pushed for Alvarez as the return.
The negotiations nearly took an unexpected turn.
According to Goldstein, then-general manager Jeff Luhnow texted Dodgers general manager Farhan Zaidi asking for “Y. Alvarez.” Zaidi initially believed Houston was requesting prized pitching prospect Yadier Álvarez rather than Yordan Alvarez. Once the misunderstanding was cleared up, the trade proceeded with Yordan as the return.
Alvarez’s first moments with the organization were memorable for another reason. After learning he had been traded, he packed his belongings and waited outside the Dodgers’ academy in the Dominican Republic for someone from the Astros to pick him up.
Instead, there was a mix-up arranging transportation, leaving Alvarez waiting until the club hurriedly sent a driver to bring him to its academy.
“I remember being in my bed when somebody knocked on the door and they asked me if I can go to the main office,” Alvarez told MLB.com this week. “They let me know I was traded to the Astros and somebody was going to pick me up. My first thought was, ‘They fired me.'”
The trade paid dividends for Houston even before Alvarez reached the majors.
Fields surrendered back-to-back home runs to Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa in the 10th inning of Game 2 of the 2017 World Series, helping fuel one of the most memorable victories in franchise history.
Alvarez debuted in 2019 and immediately established himself as one of baseball’s premier hitters, winning the American League Rookie of the Year Award. Since then, he has become the centerpiece of Houston’s lineup and entered the 2026 season among the favorites for the American League MVP Award while building a résumé that already ranks among the best offensive careers in franchise history.
Ten years later, the trade remains one of the defining transactions of the Astros’ golden era. What began as a deal for an unproven 19-year-old prospect ultimately produced one of the game’s most feared hitters and a cornerstone of Houston’s sustained success.
