Altuve Makes Franchise History as Astros Score 5-3 Victory

DENVER, CO – July 2, 2025 – The Houston Astros clinched their series against the Colorado Rockies with a 5-3 victory at Coors Field. The win was highlighted by a strong outing from Hunter Brown and a historic night for Jose Altuve, who moved up in the Astros’ all-time hits list.

Hunter Brown (9-3) earned the win, pitching six solid innings and allowing two runs on six hits while striking out eight. Bennett Sousa (3rd save) closed out the game despite giving up a run in the ninth. Rockies starter Austin Gomber received a no-decision, while Angel Chivilli (1-4) took the loss in relief.

The Astros got on the board early in the first inning with an RBI single from Cam Smith. In the second, Shay Whitcomb blasted his first career home run, a solo shot to left-center, extending Houston’s lead to 2-0.

The Rockies tied the game in the bottom of the second with a two-run homer from Mickey Moniak.
However, the Astros regained the lead in the top of the sixth. With runners on second and third, Jose Altuve hit a clutch two-run single to center field, scoring Cooper Hummel and Mauricio Dubón to make it 4-2. This hit was significant as it marked Altuve’s 2,315th career hit, passing Hall of Famer Jeff Bagwell for second place on the Astros’ all-time hits list. Cam Smith followed up with another RBI single, extending the lead to 5-2.

The Rockies managed to scrape across one more run in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Astros’ lead.

The Astros offense collected 16 hits on the day, with Cam Smith leading the charge with three hits and two RBIs. Jose Altuve and Christian Walker each added two hits.

With this series-clinching victory, the Houston Astros improved their season record to 51 wins and 34 losses (51-34). They will conclude their series against the Rockies tomorrow.
