DENVER, CO – July 3, 2025 – The Houston Astros’ attempt to complete a three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field fell short today, as they lost a tight 7-6 contest. Despite a late rally, the Astros couldn’t overcome a strong offensive showing from the Rockies, particularly from second baseman Thairo Estrada.
Rockies reliever Juan Mejia (1-0) picked up the win, while Seth Halvorsen earned his seventh save of the season, closing out a tense ninth inning. Astros reliever Jordan Weems (0-1) was tagged with the loss after yielding late runs. Houston starter Brandon Walter gave up five runs over five innings.
The Astros got off to a quick start, scoring two runs in the top of the first on an RBI double by Cam Smith and an RBI groundout by Christian Walker. However, the Rockies immediately answered in the bottom half with a two-run homer from Thairo Estrada, tying the game at 2-2.
Houston regained the lead in the second when Isaac Paredes hit an RBI double, making it 3-2. But the back-and-forth continued. Estrada tied it again for Colorado in the third with an RBI groundout, and the Rockies took their first lead in the fourth on a two-run single by Ryan Ritter, pushing the score to 5-3.
The Astros showed resilience in the seventh, with Cam Smith delivering a crucial two-run triple that tied the game once more at 5-5. However, Colorado quickly reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the seventh. After a go-ahead single from Jordan Beck made it 6-5, Estrada continued his impressive day with another RBI single, extending the lead to 7-5.
In the top of the ninth, the Astros mounted a final threat. Jake Meyers led off with a triple, and Jose Altuve followed with an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to one run. However, with runners on and two outs, Seth Halvorsen managed to induce a flyout from Victor Caratini, ending the game and preserving the Rockies’ victory.
Thairo Estrada was the star of the day for Colorado, going 3-for-4 with a home run and driving in four runs. For the Astros, Cam Smith had a strong performance, collecting three hits and three RBIs, while Jose Altuve and Jake Meyers each had two hits.
The loss brings the Houston Astros’ record to 52 wins and 35 losses (52-35). They will now travel to Los Angeles to begin a highly anticipated three-game series against the Dodgers on Friday.
