Friday’s opener pits Hunter Brown against Rangers right-hander Jacob deGrom, a marquee pitching matchup to headline the series. Ronel Blanco takes the ball Saturday against Texas’ Kumar Rocker, another start in Blanco’s own return from elbow surgery. Houston has not named a starter for Sunday’s finale against Texas right-hander Cal Quantrill; that turn technically belongs to Tatsuya Imai, but manager Joe Espada has left open the possibility of turning to Peter Lambert on four days’ rest instead, after Imai failed to escape the first inning in his last outing.
The timing adds extra weight. The series wraps up the Sunday before the August 3 trade deadline, and Houston has been clear about its intentions. Espada acknowledged this week that deadline speculation is unavoidable in the clubhouse but said the team has stayed focused. “We’ve been in this position before, so we are good at pushing those things aside and focusing on today’s game,” he said.
Texas added depth before the series, acquiring catcher Logan O’Hoppe and reliever Chase Silseth from the Angels on Wednesday, announced just minutes before Houston completed its sweep of the Angels in Anaheim.
