More than 14 months since his last major-league pitch, Hayden Wesneski returns to a mound Wednesday night against the Angels, filling a rotation spot Houston desperately needs.
Wesneski’s path back to Houston is a story in itself. Born and raised in the Houston suburb of Cypress, he grew up rooting for the Astros before playing at Cy-Fair High School and Sam Houston State. When the Astros acquired him from the Cubs in December 2024, alongside Isaac Paredes and Cam Smith in the Kyle Tucker trade, Wesneski described it as something close to a childhood fantasy.
“When you’re an Astros fan, you grow up wanting to be an Astros baseball player,” he said at the time. His guy growing up wasn’t Bagwell or Biggio, either—it was Roy Oswalt. “I always liked pitching,” Wesneski said. “Roy Oswalt was my guy.”
His first season in Houston delivered a genuine highlight before it unraveled. Wesneski earned a spot in the Astros’ 2025 Opening Day rotation and threw a career-high 10 strikeouts in a win over the Angels that April—fittingly, the same opponent he faces in his return. Manager Joe Espada praised his early work at the time, saying the Astros had been “really happy with his performance.” But diminished velocity forced a skipped turn in the rotation, and after a rough outing at Milwaukee in early May, Wesneski landed on the injured list with elbow discomfort that turned out to be a torn UCL. Tommy John surgery followed, ending his first season with the team he grew up loving after just six starts.
The rehab has gone smoothly. Wesneski made five minor-league starts across three levels this summer, posting a 2.25 ERA with 21 strikeouts and four walks over 20 innings. He reached 80 pitches in his final outing at Triple-A Sugar Land, striking out seven over 4⅓ scoreless innings.
Houston needs him now more than ever. With Spencer Arrighetti sidelined by a foot injury, Mike Burrows still out, and Tatsuya Imai’s rookie season lurching between brilliance and collapse, Wesneski’s return gives the Astros a healthy, MLB-tested arm at the exact moment their rotation depth is thinnest.
