HOUSTON, TX – May 9, 2025 – The Houston Astros returned home and got back to their winning ways, shutting out the Cincinnati Reds 3-0 last night at Daikin Park in the opening game of their three-game series. Hunter Brown delivered a superb performance on the mound, supported by timely hitting.

Astros right-hander Hunter Brown (6-1) was the star of the night, extending his impressive run with 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out nine. The bullpen, including Bryan King, Bryan Abreu, and Josh Hader (9th save), combined to complete the four-hit shutout, the Astros’ third of the season. Reds starter Nick Martinez (1-4) took the loss, giving up three runs on 10 hits in six innings.

The Astros offense broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Zach Dezenzo hit an RBI single, scoring Christian Walker and giving Houston a 1-0 lead.

Houston extended its lead in the fifth inning. Jeremy Peña hit an RBI groundout, scoring Jose Altuve. Then, Isaac Paredes followed with an RBI double to deep left field, bringing home Chas McCormick and pushing the score to 3-0.

The Reds struggled to mount any threat against the Astros pitching, managing only four hits throughout the entire game and failing to advance a runner past second base after the first inning.

The Astros collected 13 hits in the contest, with Christian Walker and Jose Altuve each having multi-hit games.

The win improved the Astros’ record to 19-18 and started their homestand on a positive note. The series continues tomorrow.
