Astros Kick Off 2025 Season with Dominant Pitching in 3-1 Win Over Mets

March 27, 2025

HOUSTON, TX – March 27, 2025 – The Houston Astros opened their 2025 campaign with a decisive 3-1 victory over the New York Mets at home last night, showcasing stellar pitching and timely hitting to start the season 1-0.

Astros ace Framber Valdez delivered a masterful performance on Opening Day. Valdez, making his first start of the year, went seven strong innings, scattering just four hits while holding the Mets scoreless. He struck out four batters and did not issue a walk, earning his first win of the season (1-0).

The Astros offense provided just enough support to back Valdez. After a scoreless first inning, Houston broke the deadlock in the bottom of the second. Following a walk to Isaac Paredes and a single by Christian Walker, Jake Meyers drove in the game’s first run with a fielder’s choice, scoring Paredes.

The Astros extended their lead in the third. After Jeremy Peña singled, Yainer Diaz singled to drive in Christian Walker. Peña then came around to score on another fielder’s choice, stretching the lead to 3-0. Meyers finished the night as a key contributor with two hits and an RBI, while Diaz also added an RBI single.

The Mets managed to scratch across their only run in the top of the ninth inning when Francisco Lindor hit a sacrifice fly off Astros closer Josh Hader. However, Hader quickly shut the door to record his first save of the season.

Mets starter Cole Holmes took the loss (0-1), giving up all three earned runs to the Astros offense.
The victory marks a positive start for the Astros as they look to build momentum in the early days of the 2025 season.
