HOUSTON, TX – March 28, 2025 – The Houston Astros suffered their first loss of the 2025 season last night, falling 5-2 to the New York Mets at Daikin Park. Despite a late rally attempt, the Astros couldn’t overcome the Mets’ early offensive surge and solid pitching.
Mets starter Tylor Megill (1-0) earned the win, delivering a strong performance over 5.0 innings, allowing just two runs on three hits while striking out six.
The Mets got on the board early against Astros starter Spencer Arrighetti (0-1), who took the loss. New York broke the scoreless tie in the top of the second inning when Francisco Alvarez singled to drive in two runs. They added another run in the fifth courtesy of a solo home run by Pete Alonso, extending their lead to 3-0.
Houston’s offense struggled to get going against Megill and the Mets bullpen for much of the game. They finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jose Altuve hit a two-run home run, his second of the season, bringing the Astros within a single run at 3-2.
However, the Mets quickly responded, adding two insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning against the Astros bullpen, pushing their lead to 5-2. The Astros offense was then stifled by a combination of Mets relievers, managing only four hits in total throughout the game.
Despite the loss, the Astros remain optimistic about the long season ahead. They will look to bounce back and even the series in the next game against the Mets.
