PITTSBURGH, PA – June 4, 2025 – The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Houston Astros 3-0 last night at PNC Park, powered by a stellar performance from their starting pitcher and timely hitting. The loss evened the three-game series at one game apiece.

Astros right-hander Ryan Gusto (3-3) took the loss, allowing three runs on eight hits over 4.1 innings. For the Pirates, Mike Burrows (1-1) earned his first win of the season, shutting out the Astros over 5.1 innings, giving up just five hits and striking out six. David Bednar (7th save) closed out the game for Pittsburgh.

The Pirates got on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit an RBI groundout, scoring Tommy Pham. Andrew McCutchen then followed with a sacrifice fly, bringing home Endy Rodríguez and putting Pittsburgh up 2-0.

They added an insurance run in the bottom of the third when Adam Frazier hit into a double play that scored Spencer Horwitz, making it 3-0.

The Astros offense struggled all night, managing only seven hits and failing to score a run. They left 13 runners on base, unable to capitalize on any scoring opportunities. Mike Burrows, making his first start against Houston, effectively stifled the Astros lineup.

The loss dropped the Astros’ record to 33-28. They will now face the Pirates in the decisive rubber match of the series.
