HOUSTON — When the Astros finalized their 2026 roster, one of the quieter stories belonged to Christian Roa.
The 26-year-old right-hander arrived in West Palm Beach as a non-roster invitee, a December minor league signing who had spent years moving through the Reds and Marlins systems without securing a lasting role in the majors. He left camp with a spot on the Opening Day roster.
Roa made his MLB debut last September with Miami, tossing three shutout innings in a brief appearance that hinted at his potential. In Triple-A Jacksonville, he followed with a 2.83 ERA across 60⅓ innings, the kind of performance that keeps a pitcher on the radar without guaranteeing an opportunity. He signed with Houston in December and came to camp needing to stand out. He did.
In 9⅔ Grapefruit League innings, Roa allowed just one run—a solo home run—while striking out 13 and issuing no walks. For a bullpen dealing with early-season injuries, including the absence of Josh Hader, that profile stood out.
Manager Joe Espada took notice. “He has had a resilient arm for quite a while,” Espada said. “We like the demeanor on the mound. We have presented some ideas about his usage and offspeed pitches and getting more in the zone, and so far he’s doing just that.”
Roa is expected to begin in lower-leverage situations as he settles in, but the opportunity is there. Pitchers who limit walks and maintain composure tend to earn more responsibility quickly.
His first appearance of the season didn’t go as planned—Roa allowed a two-run home run to Nolan Schanuel in the ninth inning of Thursday’s 3-0 loss to the Angels—but it does little to change the larger story. After years of moving through systems and waiting for a chance, he now has one in Houston.
Now comes the harder part: keeping it.
