The Astros will need to find a new backup catcher for 2026 after Victor Caratini agreed to a two-year, $14 million contract with the Minnesota Twins.
Caratini, 32, spent the past two seasons in Houston after signing a two-year, $12 million deal prior to the 2024 season. Serving primarily as the backup to starting catcher Yainer Diaz, the switch-hitter batted .263 with 20 home runs and 76 RBIs across 201 games with the Astros.
In 2025, Caratini posted career highs with 12 home runs and 46 RBIs while appearing in 114 games. His versatility added value, as he caught 49 games, made 15 appearances at first base, and served as the designated hitter in 30 contests.
The Astros expressed interest in retaining Caratini, with general manager Dana Brown calling him one of the best backup catchers in the league during his end-of-season press conference in September. However, Houston’s proximity to the luxury tax threshold limited its ability to match outside offers.
With Caratini headed to Minnesota, the Astros are expected to turn to César Salazar as their backup catcher for 2026. Salazar saw limited action last season, hitting .231 while providing solid defense and throwing out approximately 20 percent of attempted base stealers.
Minnesota plans to use Caratini in a catching platoon alongside right-handed hitter Ryan Jeffers, who is entering his final year of arbitration eligibility.
