Yordan Alvarez and Christian Walker powered the Houston Astros to a 7-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners Tuesday night, opening their final road trip of the regular season with a much-needed win at T-Mobile Park.
Alvarez drove in three runs, including two on his 41st home run of the season, while Walker broke the game open with a three-run homer. Isaac Paredes also went deep as Houston collected 12 hits, and five Astros pitchers combined to hold Seattle to four hits in the shutout.
Houston wasted little time putting pressure on Mariners starter Logan Gilbert. Jeremy Peña led off the game with a single and stole second before Alvarez singled to right, scoring Peña for his 100th RBI of the season.
Paredes and Jose Altuve followed with singles, giving the Astros four consecutive hits to open the game and loading the bases with nobody out. Gilbert escaped further damage, striking out Yainer Diaz before retiring Walker and Taylor Trammell on fly balls.
Houston threatened again in the second. Cam Smith led off with a double and Brice Matthews walked, but Peña grounded into a double play. Seattle intentionally walked Alvarez before Paredes grounded into a forceout to end the inning.
Matthews contributed defensively in the bottom half, making a sliding catch in center field to take a hit away from Josh Naylor.
Walker Reaches 200 Career Home Runs
Houston finally turned its baserunners into a big inning in the third.
Altuve opened with an infield single, and Diaz followed with a single to center. Walker then launched a three-run homer to left, his 26th of the season and the 200th of his career, to extend Houston’s lead to 4-0.
The milestone ended a lengthy wait for Walker, who had been sitting on 199 career home runs since Aug. 27. The three-run shot also gave him 83 RBI this season.
The Astros continued putting runners aboard after the homer. Smith reached on a throwing error and Matthews singled, although Gilbert escaped without allowing another run.
Paredes added to the lead in the sixth, sending a solo homer to left off José A. Ferrer. His 23rd home run of the season made it 5-0.
Javier Exits Early
Cristian Javier’s night ended after two scoreless innings when he left with right groin tightness. He allowed one hit and two walks while striking out two.
Javier’s early departure left the Astros needing seven innings from the bullpen, and Houston’s relievers responded with seven scoreless frames.
Miguel Ullola replaced Javier in the third and pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two to earn the win. Bennett Sousa followed with two scoreless innings and three strikeouts. AJ Blubaugh worked a scoreless seventh, and Logan VanWey finished the game with two scoreless innings and three strikeouts.
Houston’s five pitchers combined to hold Seattle to four hits while striking out nine. The Mariners went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position.
Alvarez Adds No. 41
Alvarez supplied the final blow in the eighth.
Peña was hit by a pitch with one out, and Alvarez followed with a two-run homer to right for his 41st of the season. The blast gave Houston a 7-0 lead and raised Alvarez’s RBI total to 102. He finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and a walk.
The three-RBI night also kept Alvarez in the American League Triple Crown race. He entered Tuesday batting .313 with 40 home runs and 99 RBI. MLB had him leading the AL batting race and trailing Junior Caminero by one home run entering the game.
A Shared Astros Birthday
The win came on a birthday shared by Jeremy Peña and Carlos Correa.
Peña turned 29 Tuesday, while Correa turned 32. Peña took over as Houston’s shortstop in 2022 after Correa left for Minnesota and went on to win World Series MVP honors as a rookie. Correa returned to Houston at the 2025 Trade Deadline.
Peña marked his birthday by going 1-for-4, stealing his 10th base of the season, and scoring twice. Both runs came on Alvarez hits: Peña scored Houston’s first run on Alvarez’s first-inning single and was aboard for his two-run homer in the eighth.
Peña was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning and was replaced by Nick Allen at shortstop in the bottom half.
AL West Race Remains Tight
The victory snapped Houston’s three-game losing streak and improved the Astros to 78-79 with five games remaining. Texas lost to the Mets Tuesday night, leaving Houston and Texas tied in the AL West. Houston holds the head-to-head tiebreaker.
The Astros close the two-game series against Seattle Wednesday night at T-Mobile Park. George Kirby (9-11, 4.24 ERA) is scheduled to start for Seattle, while Houston had not officially named its starter as of late Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 9:10 p.m. CT.
Houston then travels to Sacramento for four games against the Athletics to close the regular season.
