HOUSTON, TX – July 12, 2025 – The Houston Astros delivered a dramatic extra-innings victory over the Texas Rangers last night at Daikin Park, securing a hard-fought 5-4 walk-off win in the 11th inning of their intense Silver Boot Series matchup. Rookie pinch-runner Zack Short played the hero, singling home the winning run after a resilient Astros comeback.

The game began as advertised, with a highly anticipated pitching duel between Astros lefty Framber Valdez and Rangers ace Jacob deGrom. Valdez turned in a stellar outing, allowing just one unearned run on four hits over six innings, striking out 10 without issuing a walk. DeGrom was nearly as sharp, surrendering two earned runs on four hits and a walk, while fanning eight over his six frames.

The scoring started early when the Rangers took an unearned 1-0 lead in the first on a wild pitch by Valdez. However, Jose Altuve quickly responded with a two-out solo home run (his 17th of the season) off deGrom in the bottom of the first to tie the game.

The Astros took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning courtesy of Yainer Diaz’s 14th home run of the year. Mauricio Dubón extended that lead to 3-1 in the seventh with his sixth solo shot of the season off Rangers reliever Jacob Webb.

However, the Rangers proved resilient. Marcus Semien cut the deficit to 3-2 with his 11th home run in the eighth inning off Astros setup man Bryan Abreu. The real drama began in the ninth when Kyle Higashioka blasted a two-out solo home run off Astros closer Josh Hader, tying the game at 3-3 and handing Hader his first blown save of the season after 25 consecutive saves.

The game then stretched into extra innings. After a scoreless tenth, the Rangers took a 4-3 lead in the top of the 11th when Adolis García hit an RBI single off Bennett Sousa, scoring automatic runner Marcus Semien.

Undeterred, the Astros rallied in the bottom of the 11th. After loading the bases against Rangers reliever Robert Garcia, Christian Walker, fresh off paternity leave, came through with a crucial sacrifice fly, scoring Cam Smith and tying the game at 4-4. The stage was then set for Zack Short, who entered as a pinch-runner earlier in the game. Short delivered a clutch RBI single to right field off Hoby Milner, sending Smith home and sealing the dramatic 5-4 walk-off victory for Houston.

Bennett Sousa (3-0) earned the win for the Astros in relief, while Robert Garcia (1-5) took the loss for the Rangers. The Rangers’ offense struggled to put hits together, striking out a remarkable 19 times in the contest.

The win lifts the Astros to a 56-39 record on the season, while the Rangers fall to 47-49. The thrilling extra-innings contest adds another memorable chapter to the heated rivalry, with the Astros now looking to carry this momentum into the next game of the series.
