ST. LOUIS, MO – April 15, 2025 – The Houston Astros bounced back impressively on Tax Day, shutting out the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 last night at Busch Stadium. A stellar pitching performance led by Hunter Brown and timely hitting secured the win and evened the series.
Astros right-hander Hunter Brown (2-1) was magnificent, extending his scoreless-inning streak to 17. He pitched six dominant innings, allowing just four hits and no runs while striking out four, lowering his ERA to 1.50 on the season. The bullpen trio of Bryan King, Bryan Abreu, and closer Josh Hader (4th save) combined to preserve the shutout, which was the Cardinals’ first of the 2025 season.
The game was a pitching duel through five scoreless innings, with Cardinals starter Erick Fedde (1-2) also delivering a strong outing, giving up just one run over six innings.
The Astros finally broke the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning. After Jeremy Peña reached base, Jake Meyers delivered an RBI single, scoring Peña and giving Houston a 1-0 lead.
Insurance came in the eighth inning when Yordan Alvarez launched a solo home run, his second of the season, off Cardinals reliever Kyle Leahy, pushing the lead to 2-0.
The Cardinals managed six hits on the night but were unable to string them together or come up with a clutch hit, leaving runners stranded and ultimately being blanked by the Astros’ pitching staff.
The victory improves the Astros’ record to 8-9 and sets up a rubber match in St. Louis.
