TORONTO — The Houston Astros, bruised from a tough extra-innings loss the night before, bounced back with a gritty 3-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre. The win, fueled by a stellar performance from starter Jason Alexander and a clutch home run from Carlos Correa, allowed the Astros to take the series and maintain their crucial lead in the AL West.
Alexander was the story of the night, providing a much-needed long outing for a taxed bullpen. He pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and one walk while keeping the Blue Jays’ powerful offense in check. His ability to go deep into the game was particularly critical given that the bullpen was forced to throw over eight innings the previous night after Luis Garcia exited with an injury. Alexander’s masterful performance was praised by manager Joe Espada, who noted his ability to “go after hitters” and “keep people off balance.”
On offense, the Astros got on the board early with a Yainer Diaz RBI double in the second inning. The highlight of the night came in the sixth when Carlos Correa connected for his 200th career home run, a solo shot that gave the Astros a 2-0 lead. This landmark homer, his 13th of the season, came at a perfect time for Houston.
The game became tense in the eighth inning when the Blue Jays rallied against reliever Steven Okert, tying the game at 2-2. But the Astros had one more answer. In the top of the ninth, Yainer Diaz, who had been a key contributor all night, launched a go-ahead solo home run off of Blue Jays closer Jeff Hoffman.
With a one-run lead, the Astros turned to Bryan Abreu for the save. After his struggles the previous night, Abreu was determined to close it out. He delivered a clean, 1-2-3 inning, securing his fifth save of the season and closing out the victory. The win improves the Astros’ record to 79-67 and, more importantly, keeps them one game ahead of the Seattle Mariners in the AL West standings. The Astros will face the Blue Jays for the third and last game in this series Thursday afternoon at 2:07 Central.
