Down five runs and running out of time, the Houston Astros’ top prospects showed exactly the kind of fight the organization hopes to see from its next wave of talent. The group rallied from a 6-1 deficit to defeat the Miami Marlins’ prospects 7-6 Thursday morning at CACTI Park of the Palm Beaches, delivering one of the most memorable finishes of MLB’s Spring Breakout showcase.
The early going was rough. Miami built a 6-1 lead methodically, aided in part by a pair of Xavier Neyens errors that opened the door. Houston’s offense managed to chip away, but the Marlins remained in control deep into the game until the momentum flipped.
German Ramirez reached on a walk and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Neyens followed by reaching base, and Arturo Flores delivered a sharp two-run double to center, cutting the deficit to one and injecting life into Houston’s dugout.
The ninth inning brought the drama. Nick Monistere and Juan Sierra worked back-to-back walks to set the table. Ramirez then lined a single to right to tie the game at six. With the bases loaded, Caden Powell put the ball in play, and a fielder’s choice brought Sierra home for the walk-off run, completing a stunning 7-6 comeback.
On the mound, Cole Hertzler was the standout, tossing three scoreless innings with five strikeouts and allowing just two walks. Leomar Rosario followed with a dominant inning, striking out three. Alimber Santa earned the win with a clean ninth inning.
For Neyens, MLB Pipeline’s No. 2 Astros prospect, it was a mixed debut. The two early errors contributed to Miami’s lead, but at just 19 years old and appearing in his first professional game, the growing pains were expected. The tools are evident; the refinement will follow.
The larger takeaway was resilience. Down five runs with Opening Day just a week away, Houston’s prospects didn’t fold. It’s a trait that could define this group as it begins to make its mark across the system this season.
