Astros prospect Jason Schiavone has spent the season climbing through the organization. Now he has done something no Minor League catcher has accomplished in 45 years.
Schiavone stole his 30th base of the season Wednesday night for Triple-A Sugar Land, completing a 30-homer, 30-steal season. He is the first Minor League catcher to reach 30/30 since Willie Royster did it for the Charlotte O’s in 1981. Schiavone and Royster account for the only two recorded 30/30 seasons by a Minor League catcher dating to 1946, and no catcher has ever accomplished the feat in the Major Leagues.
Schiavone Caps Breakout Season With History
Schiavone entered Wednesday with 29 stolen bases and wasted little time reaching the milestone. After drawing a two-out walk in the fourth inning of Sugar Land’s 5-0 loss to Las Vegas at Constellation Field, he stole second for No. 30.
He wasn’t finished. Schiavone walked again to lead off the seventh, stole second, and then stole third as part of a double steal with Zach Dezenzo. His three stolen bases tied the Space Cowboys’ single-game franchise record and gave him 32 for the season to go with 32 home runs.
The milestone is the latest achievement in a season that has taken the 23-year-old from High-A Asheville to Double-A Corpus Christi and Triple-A Sugar Land.
Schiavone opened the year by hitting .289/.452/.766 with 17 home runs, 10 doubles, 42 RBI, and nine stolen bases in 35 games for Asheville. He was promoted to Corpus Christi on May 19 and then to Sugar Land on Sept. 8.
He hit his first Triple-A home run Tuesday night against Las Vegas, giving him 32 for the season. One night later, he joined the 30/30 club.
Schiavone is the first Astros prospect to record a 30/30 season since Kyle Tucker hit 34 home runs and stole 30 bases for Triple-A Round Rock in 2019. He is also the third Astros Minor Leaguer to accomplish the feat, joining Tucker and George Springer, who had 37 home runs and 45 stolen bases in 2013.
Astros’ Minor League Player of the Year
The historic night came one day after the Astros announced Schiavone as their 2026 Minor League Player of the Year. He was also named the organization’s Minor League Player of the Month in April and May.
Schiavone began the season outside MLB Pipeline’s Astros Top 30 prospects before climbing as high as No. 3. After the organization’s 2026 draft picks were added to the rankings, he moved to No. 6, where he currently sits.
Through Wednesday, Schiavone is batting .246 with 32 home runs, 88 RBI, 32 stolen bases, a .388 on-base percentage, and a .914 OPS across three levels this season.
From 11th-Round Pick to Triple-A
Houston selected Schiavone in the 11th round of the 2024 MLB Draft out of James Madison.
Two years later, he has reached Triple-A, earned the Astros’ Minor League Player of the Year award, and produced the first 30/30 season by a Minor League catcher in 45 years. His season will continue after Sugar Land’s schedule ends, with Schiavone slated to play for Leones del Escogido in the Dominican Winter League.
