HOUSTON, TEXAS — September 16, 2025 — The Houston Astros held on for a heart-stopping 6-5 victory over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday at Daikin Park. With the win, the Astros now have a chance to complete a series sweep and retain the Silver Boot trophy in the final game of the series. The victory was far from easy, as the Astros nearly let a six-run lead slip away in the late innings, but ultimately, they preserved a crucial win that was a far cry from the comfortable lead they once held.
The Astros’ victory was built early by a strong offensive showing. Jeremy Peña was the star of the night, reaching base an incredible five times with three singles, a walk, and a hit by pitch. The offense first struck in the bottom of the first when Jose Altuve’s sacrifice fly gave the Astros an early lead. They added another run in the third before a massive four-run fourth inning. Yainer Diaz’s RBI double kicked off the scoring barrage, followed by a clutch two-run single by Jesús Sánchez. Another RBI single from Altuve pushed the lead to a seemingly insurmountable 6-0.
On the mound, the Astros took a “bullpen game” approach. Rookie A.J. Blubaugh got the start and was brilliant, striking out seven batters over three scoreless innings in his second career start. Colton Gordon then came on in relief and pitched three innings to earn the win. However, the game changed dramatically in the eighth. With the Rangers down six, they erupted for four runs against Astros reliever Enyel De Los Santos. A two-run homer by Jonah Heim was the first blow, followed by an RBI double from Josh Jung and a run-scoring single from Adolis García, cutting the lead to just one.
Manager Joe Espada turned to closer Bryan Abreu, who came in to get the final four outs. Abreu walked the first batter he faced but then settled in, preserving the one-run lead and securing his seventh save of the season.
The nail-biting win proved vital for Houston’s postseason hopes. They now stand at 83-69, a half-game behind the surging Seattle Mariners for first place in the American League West. The victory also moved the Astros a half-game ahead of the Boston Red Sox for the second of three American League wild-card spots. Meanwhile, the Rangers’ loss was a significant blow, dropping their record to 79-73 and pushing them 3.5 games behind Boston for the final wild-card position.
