HOUSTON, Texas — The Houston Astros announced today that they have placed All-Star closer Josh Hader on the 15-day injured list with a left shoulder strain. The move is retroactive to Monday, August 11, 2025.
Hader, a key component of the Astros’ bullpen, reported shoulder discomfort before Monday’s game against the Boston Red Sox. He is currently undergoing further medical evaluation to determine the full extent of the injury, and an official timeline for his return has not yet been established.
“It’s a punch in the gut,” said Astros manager Joe Espada. “But he’s seeing doctors right now. We’re getting more tests done and hopefully, this is not going to be a long-term thing.”
The loss of Hader is a significant blow to the Astros, who are currently in a tight race for the AL West division title. In his second season with the club, Hader has been a dominant presence, posting a 6-2 record with a 2.05 ERA and an MLB-leading 28 saves. He had converted his first 25 save opportunities this season, setting a new franchise record.
To fill Hader’s spot on the 26-man roster, the Astros have reinstated right-hander Shawn Dubin from the 15-day injured list, recalled left-hander Colton Gordon from Triple-A Sugar Land, and designated veteran right-hander Hector Neris for assignment.
In Hader’s absence, the Astros will employ a committee approach to the closer role. Espada stated that he will not name a single replacement and will instead rely on a combination of relievers, with Bryan Abreu being a likely candidate to handle the majority of high-leverage situations.
