Astros Make Surprise Bryan Abreu Move Before Blue Jays Series
The Houston Astros placed reliever Bryan Abreu on the restricted list Monday before the series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre. Manager Joe Espada said Abreu is tending to a personal matter but did not offer further specifics, including whether Abreu could rejoin the club during the team’s next series in Detroit.
“We’re giving Abreu some time for him to take care of his personal matter,” Espada said.
Abreu last pitched Saturday against the Cleveland Guardians. He has appeared in 29 games this season, posting a 6.39 ERA with five saves.
The restricted list is used for players who are under contract but unavailable to play. There is no minimum or maximum duration for the designation, and players on the restricted list are not on their team’s 40-man roster.
Logan VanWey was recalled from Triple-A Sugar Land to fill Abreu’s roster spot. The right-hander has made three appearances for Houston this season without allowing a run.
