The Houston Astros head west Friday to open a three-game series against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park, beginning one of their most important series of the stretch run. San Diego has won nine of its last 11 games and enters the weekend just one game behind the final National League Wild Card spot, giving both clubs plenty to play for.
Padres fans will tell you their ballpark has more personality than most. Astros fans making the trip can also sample one of Petco Park’s biggest attractions off the field: its wide selection of San Diego restaurants and local food vendors, widely regarded among the best ballpark dining options in baseball.
The Padres’ lineup still revolves around two familiar stars, though their seasons have taken very different paths. Manny Machado struggled by his lofty standards for much of the year but has caught fire lately, going 14-for-36 over his last eight games while driving in four runs Tuesday against Arizona. Fernando Tatis Jr., meanwhile, has endured a disappointing season by his own standards despite showing flashes of breaking out, including a recent walk-off home run and a four-hit performance. Keeping both hitters contained will provide another significant test for Houston’s pitching staff, particularly a bullpen that has played a major role in the Astros’ climb back into first place.
San Diego also strengthened its rotation at the trade deadline by acquiring left-hander Robbie Ray from the Giants, and he’ll make his Padres debut in Friday’s opener. Houston counters with Ronel Blanco, who continues building back from Tommy John surgery. Peter Lambert is scheduled to start Saturday, while Cristian Javier is expected to take the ball in Sunday’s finale.
That finale carries added significance as NBC’s Sunday Night Baseball showcase, with American League Triple Crown leader Yordan Alvarez sharing the spotlight with Machado. No matter how that matchup unfolds, the Padres’ Swinging Friar will ring the mission bell after every San Diego victory, continuing one of Petco Park’s signature traditions.
Houston enters the weekend at 59-57, still leading the American League West despite Wednesday’s extra-inning loss to Toronto. The Padres, at 59-55, sit just one game out of the National League Wild Card race, making this one of the more meaningful August series for both clubs. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 8:40 p.m. Central.
