The Astros added some infield depth Wednesday.
Houston acquired minor-league infielder Raynel Delgado from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for cash considerations and assigned him to Triple-A Sugar Land.
Delgado, 26, brings versatility more than prospect pedigree. The left-handed hitter has appeared at all four infield positions in the minors, spending most of his time at second and third base while compiling a .267/.351/.384 slash line across 383 career Triple-A games. He has not yet made his major league debut.
Born in Cuba and selected by Cleveland in the sixth round of the 2018 draft, Delgado spent seven seasons in the Guardians organization before a stint with Milwaukee’s Triple-A affiliate in 2025. He joined the Rays on a minor-league deal this offseason and hit .250/.320/.362 in 61 games with Triple-A Durham.
The move comes as Houston continues to patch together infield coverage. Nick Allen landed on the injured list Monday with a left hamstring strain, and Braden Shewmake remains sidelined with a right adductor strain. For now, Shay Whitcomb and Brice Matthews have helped absorb the workload at the major league level, while Delgado gives the Astros another experienced option at Sugar Land.
