HOUSTON, TX – August 31, 2025 — The Houston Astros’ offensive struggles continued on Sunday, as they were shut out by the Los Angeles Angels 3-0 at Daikin Park. The loss marks the second straight day the Angels have defeated the Astros and the fifth time this month the Astros have been blanked. The combined effort of the Angels’ pitching staff held the Astros to just two hits, a frustrating performance for the home team’s lineup.
Angels starter José Soriano was masterful on the mound, carving through the Astros’ lineup with precision. He was the unquestioned star of the game, allowing just one hit and striking eight batters over seven dominant innings. He received excellent support from the Angels’ bullpen, as relievers Luis García and Kenley Jansen threw two perfect innings to secure the shutout victory.
For the Astros, Hunter Brown delivered a solid start despite the loss. He pitched six innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out five. The Angels’ first run came off Brown in the fifth inning on a solo home run from Oswald Peraza, his first since being traded from the Yankees. Lance McCullers Jr. relieved Brown and pitched a scoreless seventh, but then gave up two runs in the eighth on a double from Mike Trout and a throwing error. Bryan King then came in to close out the eighth.
The game also featured a frightening moment for the Angels. In the eighth inning, Angels outfielder Taylor Ward was injured when he ran into the left-field scoreboard while attempting to make a catch. He was bleeding from a cut above his right eye and had to be carted off the field for further evaluation.
The loss drops the Astros’ record to 75-62. They now hold a 2.0-game lead over the Seattle Mariners in the American League West, who won their game today. The Astros will look to get back on track and salvage a series split with the Angels in the final game of the four-game set on Monday.
