A protester carrying a Palestinian flag ran onto the field at Yankee Stadium during Friday night’s Subway Series game between the Yankees and Mets, on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
The incident occurred during the seventh inning. The man, identified by police as 38-year-old Kelly Marcucci, ran through the outfield before stadium security caught and tackled him. He was escorted from the field as fans chanted “USA,” and several beer cans were thrown toward him.
Marcucci was wearing a baseball jersey bearing the words “No Kings.” The Athletic reported that he entered the field at exactly 9:11 p.m.
Major League Baseball marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks with commemorations Friday. At Yankee Stadium, several members of the 2001 Yankees participated in ceremonies honoring the nearly 3,000 people killed in the attacks.
Play resumed after Marcucci was removed from the field.
According to police, Marcucci was arrested and charged with trespass and violating a misdemeanor local ordinance. He was issued a desk appearance ticket and will answer the charges in court at a later date.
