The Houston Astros have spent much of the season searching for consistent production from their outfield. They may be finding it in Cam Smith.
The rookie right fielder has become one of Houston’s most productive hitters over the past two weeks, delivering several of the club’s biggest hits while helping stabilize an offense that had begun to cool after a strong stretch before the trade deadline. His latest performance came Monday night at Oracle Park, where he went 3-for-4 with a game-tying home run in the seventh inning and another game-tying RBI single with two outs in the ninth before the Astros completed a 6-3 victory in 10 innings over the San Francisco Giants.
The timing couldn’t be better for a club trying to hold off the Rangers atop the American League West.
Houston entered the week having dropped consecutive series to the Blue Jays and Padres, scoring just 22 runs over its previous six games. While the heart of the lineup remained dangerous, the Astros needed more consistent production beyond Yordan Alvarez and Isaac Paredes. Smith has started to answer that call.
Over his last 10 games, Smith is batting .432 (16-for-37) while showing a growing ability to produce in the biggest moments. Smith credits the turnaround to a simpler approach at the plate.
“Honestly, I think just over time I just get more comfortable and then I start swinging at better pitches,” Smith said. “I think sticking with a plan and approach works as well.”
His recent success hasn’t been built on bloop hits or good fortune.
Smith has been driving the baseball with authority, highlighted by his game-tying home run Monday and several hard-hit balls throughout the past week. More importantly, he’s beginning to deliver when Houston needs him most. His ninth-inning RBI single Monday extended the game with the Astros down to their final strike, setting the stage for Jeremy Peña’s go-ahead hit an inning later.
Manager Joe Espada believes those moments fit the rookie’s personality.
“What I like about Cam is that he embraces those big moments,” Espada said. “He likes them. He wants to be in them.”
That’s an encouraging development for an Astros club that has spent much of the season looking for dependable offense from its outfield. Houston never needed Smith to carry the offense. It needed him to grow into a dependable everyday contributor while the established stars continued to lead the way.
The 22-year-old appears to be taking that step.
One hot stretch won’t define a season, and pitchers will adjust as the league gathers more information. The challenge now is turning a productive couple of weeks into sustained success through the stretch run.
If Smith can continue producing alongside Alvarez, Paredes, and a resurgent Jeremy Peña, the Astros’ lineup suddenly looks deeper than it did just a week ago. For a team with postseason aspirations, Cam Smith may have arrived at exactly the right time.
