The Astros got the everyday center fielder general manager Dana Brown had been chasing all summer when they acquired Daulton Varsho from Toronto on Monday, sending right-handed pitcher Spencer Arrighetti, still working back from a foot injury, to the Blue Jays in return. What they didn’t get, at least based on this season’s numbers, is much offense.
Varsho enters Houston’s lineup hitting .243 with a .307 on-base percentage and a .375 slugging mark across 99 games with the Blue Jays this year, a modest .682 OPS. He’s added seven home runs and nine stolen bases, useful pieces of a broader skill set, but not the kind of bat that jumps off a stat sheet. If Houston was hoping the deadline would deliver a middle-of-the-order thumper, Varsho’s 2026 line doesn’t support that read on its own.
Manager Joe Espada sees it differently. “He fits a hole that we’ve had here for a while,” Espada said. He added that Varsho brings a different offensive dynamic as a left-handed bat who can really play center field, and that he expects his raw power to play up at Daikin Park, praising his speed and baserunning as well.
Varsho was in the visitors’ cage at Daikin Park Monday morning, preparing for a series against the very team that would trade for him hours later. By that evening, he was hitting cleanup in the home dugout instead, sounding thrilled with the move and calling his new clubhouse “awesome.” Brown said Houston also explored multiple pitching trades before the deadline but backed away when the prospect cost got too steep, a notable restraint given how thin the farm system remains and given his own contract expires at season’s end.
Whether Varsho’s production catches up to Espada’s enthusiasm remains to be seen, but Houston has clearly bet that Varsho’s defense, speed, and left-handed swing will outweigh the modest offensive production he’s shown so far in 2026.
