Dan Hennigan’s departure this week for an assistant coaching job at Wake Forest wasn’t an isolated move. It’s the second time in a little over a year that a member of Houston’s coaching staff has left for the same program, following former director of pitching Eric Niesen, who joined the Demon Deacons as pitching coach in 2025.
Hennigan only recently took on the director of hitting and offensive coordinator title, stepping into the role this year after a season as the club’s hitting coordinator. His job wasn’t hands-on mechanical work with hitters—that fell to hitting coach Victor Rodriguez and assistant Anthony Iapoce—but rather game planning and preparing hitters using data and analytics. He grew into a regular dugout presence over the course of the season despite not being expected to travel with the team initially. Chuckie Caufield, a special advisor and roving hitting coordinator who joined the organization in 2024, will absorb some of Hennigan’s responsibilities going forward. The Astros have not announced whether the club intends to fill Hennigan’s position or permanently redistribute those duties.
The Wake Forest connection isn’t a coincidence. Wake Forest, an NCAA Division I program in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, has become one of college baseball’s national powers while building one of the sport’s most sophisticated analytics operations. The program has built one of the more serious analytics operations in college baseball, a student-run department with more than 20 members working on player evaluation, scouting, and development models under a director of data analytics—infrastructure that looks far more like a professional front office than a typical college support staff. The Demon Deacons have backed that investment up with results, including a recent trip to the College World Series, making the program a credible landing spot for coaches whose specialty is data-driven preparation rather than traditional player development.
That overlap likely explains why two specialists—one in pitching and one in hitting—left the same MLB franchise for the same college program within about a year of each other. Coaches whose value is built around interpreting and applying data tend to go where the infrastructure to use it well already exists, and Wake Forest has clearly made the case that it can offer that, along with the appeal of a more predictable academic calendar and greater job stability than many professional coaching positions, where staffs often change alongside managers and front offices.
Wake Forest has now established itself as a legitimate destination for analytically minded Astros coaches, turning what once looked like an isolated hire into a developing pipeline between one of baseball’s most data-driven organizations and one of college baseball’s most analytically advanced programs.
