KANSAS CITY, MO – April 25, 2025 – The Houston Astros’ four-game winning streak came to an end last night, as they were shut out 2-0 by the Kansas City Royals in the opening game of their three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Royals starter Seth Lugo delivered a masterful performance, stifling the Astros’ offense.
Seth Lugo (2-3) was the star for Kansas City, pitching eight brilliant scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and striking out eight batters. His dominant outing earned him the win. Lucas Erceg (1st save) closed out the ninth to secure the shutout. Astros starter Hayden Wesneski (1-2) took the loss, giving up two runs on eight hits over five innings, despite a generally solid performance.
The Royals scratched across their first run in the bottom of the fifth inning. After a double by Dairon Blanco, Hunter Renfroe hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Blanco and putting Kansas City up 1-0.
They added an insurance run in the sixth inning. With runners on, Kyle Isbel hit another sacrifice fly, extending the lead to 2-0.
The Astros offense struggled to solve Lugo, managing only three hits throughout the game – two from Isaac Paredes and one from Victor Caratini. They had a fleeting opportunity in the eighth inning when Victor Caratini led off with a single, but a crucial double play quickly extinguished the threat.
The loss snapped the Astros’ four-game winning streak and dropped their record to 13-12 on the season. They will look to bounce back in the second game of the series.
