HOUSTON, TX – April 23, 2025 – The Houston Astros continued their impressive turnaround, defeating the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1 last night at Daikin Park to complete a dominant three-game sweep. The victory marks the Astros’ fourth consecutive win.
Astros starter Ryan Gusto (3-1) earned the win, pitching 5 2/3 strong innings, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out six. The bullpen, including Bryan King, Bryan Abreu, and closer Josh Hader (7th save), shut down the Blue Jays for the remainder of the game, securing the victory. Blue Jays starter Bowden Francis (2-3) took the loss, surrendering three runs on eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.
The Astros offense got off to a quick start in the bottom of the second inning. Christian Walker led off with a solo home run to left field, his third of the season, giving Houston a 1-0 lead. Yainer Díaz then tripled and scored on an RBI single by Zach Dezenzo. Yordan Alvarez capped the three-run inning with a sacrifice fly, making it 3-0.
Toronto’s only run came in the fourth inning when George Springer hit an RBI double off Gusto, cutting the Astros’ lead to 3-1.
Despite getting runners on late in the game, including two in scoring position in the ninth, the Blue Jays’ bats couldn’t break through against Houston’s bullpen. Josh Hader struck out Alejandro Kirk and induced a flyout from Myles Straw to end the game and secure his seventh save of the season.
The Astros recorded 13 hits in the contest, compared to Toronto’s five, showcasing a balanced offensive attack. The sweep is the Astros’ first of the season and extends their winning streak to four games, improving their record to 13-11.
