Astros Edge Mariners 2-1 in Extra-Innings Thriller, Clutch Hitting Woes Continue for Seattle

SEATTLE, WA – April 7, 2025 – The Houston Astros opened their series against the Seattle Mariners with a narrow 4-3 loss last night at T-Mobile Park. Despite taking a late lead, the Astros ultimately fell to a clutch hit from the Mariners offense.

Mariners right-hander Logan Gilbert started strong, carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finishing with 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball, striking out seven. Reliever Gregory Santos (1-1) earned the win, and Andrés Muñoz secured his fourth save of the season.

The Mariners got on the board in the fifth inning when Ryan Bliss launched a two-run home run, his first of the season, giving Seattle a 2-0 lead.

The Astros finally broke through in the sixth inning when Jose Altuve connected for a one-out solo home run, his third of the season and Houston’s first hit of the game, cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Houston then took the lead in dramatic fashion in the top of the eighth inning. With the bases loaded and two outs, Christian Walker hit a grounder that was misplayed by Mariners third baseman Dylan Moore. The error allowed two unearned runs (Jose Altuve and Jake Meyers) to score, putting the Astros ahead 3-2.

However, the lead was short-lived. In the bottom of the eighth, Mariners slugger Jorge Polanco hit a two-run single off Astros reliever Bryan Abreu, which deflected off Abreu’s leg, scoring two runs and giving Seattle a 4-3 lead. Astros reliever Tayler Scott (0-1) took the loss.

The Astros loaded the bases later in the eighth but failed to score, and could not mount another rally in the ninth.

The loss brings the Astros’ record to 4-6 on the season as they look to rebound in the next game of the series.
