March 29, 2025

HOUSTON, TX – March 29, 2025 – The Houston Astros bounced back decisively last night, defeating the New York Mets 9-3 at Daikin Park to win their opening series of the 2025 season. A strong offensive display and a solid outing from their starting pitcher propelled the Astros to victory.

Astros right-hander Cristian Javier (1-0) earned his first win of the season, navigating 5.0 innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits, while striking out five. He managed to work around some early traffic to keep his team in the game.

The Astros offense wasted no time getting on the board against Mets starter Sean Manaea (0-1). In the bottom of the first inning, Jose Altuve launched his third home run of the season, a two-run shot, giving Houston an immediate 2-0 lead. They continued to pile on in the second when Jake Meyers hit a solo home run, making it 3-0.

The Mets cut into the lead with a run in the fourth inning, but Houston exploded for four more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Yainer Diaz delivered a two-run single, and Christian Walker followed with a two-run double, pushing the Astros’ lead to a commanding 7-1.

While the Mets added a run in the sixth and one more in the ninth, Houston’s bullpen held steady. The Astros offense wasn’t done either, tacking on two additional runs in the eighth to cap off their scoring.

Key offensive performances included Jose Altuve’s early two-run blast, setting the tone for the night, and big hits from Yainer Diaz and Christian Walker that blew the game open in the fifth.
The win puts the Astros at 2-1 on the young season, securing their first series win and signaling their offensive capabilities after a more subdued performance in the previous game.
