Yordan Wins Again, This Time on Four Legs
Yordan Alvarez is having an MVP-caliber season for the Houston Astros. Apparently, his equine namesake is pretty good at his job, too.
Yordan, a three-year-old colt owned by Bregman Family Racing and named in honor of Alvarez, picked up his first career victory Sunday at Southwell Racecourse in Nottinghamshire, England.
The Thoroughbred is owned by the racing partnership managed by former Astros third baseman Alex Bregman and his wife, Reagan. Bregman and Alvarez spent six seasons together in Houston and were teammates on the Astros’ 2022 World Series championship team.
Yordan entered the six-furlong Grace & Dotty Maiden Stakes as the 6-5 favorite in a field of nine. He took the lead late and pulled away over the final stretch to secure the victory, earning £5,400.
The win came in Yordan’s second start of the year. He finished second at Leicester Racecourse on July 28 before breaking through Sunday at Southwell.
Bregman Family Racing celebrated the victory on social media with an appropriate message: “Big win for the Big Man YORDAN!”
Horse racing is more than a casual sideline for Bregman. He and Reagan have built a successful Thoroughbred operation, and Bregman was named OwnerView’s New Owner of the Year in 2023. The stable has won 14 races and earned more than $1.6 million over the past three years.
Yordan is not the first Bregman-owned horse with a baseball connection. Bregman previously partnered with pitcher Walker Buehler to own March of Time, who won at Santa Anita in 2023.
Meanwhile, the human Yordan is putting together quite a season of his own. Alvarez is the overwhelming favorite for the 2026 American League MVP award as the Astros try to hold onto first place in the AL West.
One Yordan is chasing an MVP award in Houston. The other just found the winner’s circle in England. Who’s Yordaddy, indeed.
