The Houston Astros have spent the past two days surrounded by uncertainty. Owner Jim Crane has now cleared up at least one part of it: Joe Espada will remain the team’s manager through the end of the 2026 season, and according to Crane, no decision has been made about what happens after that.
That contradicts a report Monday from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, who wrote that a high-ranking Astros official said Espada would not receive a new contract for 2027.
Crane disputed that account Tuesday before the Astros opened their series against the Yankees.
“I don’t know where that got mixed up, but that’s the same answer I gave since the first of the year,” Crane said. “We told him we’d deal with that at the end of the season and we’ve never changed that answer all year long.”
Conflicting Reports About Espada’s Status
Nightengale’s report arrived hours after the Astros announced they had parted ways with general manager Dana Brown, whose contract was also set to expire after this season. With Brown suddenly gone and Espada in the final year of his deal, the report appeared to signal that Houston was preparing for changes in both the front office and dugout.
But another account soon emerged.
Chandler Rome of The Athletic reported Monday afternoon that Espada’s status had not changed, citing two team sources who said the manager had not had any conversations about his future. Espada was in New York with the Astros and remained scheduled to manage Tuesday night’s series opener.
Crane’s comments now publicly contradict the central claim in Nightengale’s report.
Before speaking with reporters Tuesday, Crane met with Espada. Espada emerged from the meeting focused on the immediate task rather than his future beyond this season.
“Focus on winning today, that’s how I left that,” Espada said. “My responsibility is to lead this team. We have a very important stretch of games here. So I walk out of our office ready to go.”
The Astros then beat the Yankees 9-7 and reclaimed first place in the AL West.
Espada’s Future Still Hasn’t Been Decided
Crane’s comments settle Espada’s immediate status, but they do not guarantee he will return in 2027.
Espada is completing the final year of his contract, and Crane said the organization has always intended to address the manager’s future after the season. Espada is now 241-214 since replacing Dusty Baker before the 2024 season. Houston won the AL West in his first year as manager but missed the postseason in 2025 for the first time since 2016.
Crane reiterated Tuesday that his expectation remains for the Astros to reach the postseason every year.
“We had a little hiccup last year where we didn’t make the playoffs but we’re right there,” Crane said. “I think some few adjustments we can get back to that and some good decisions.”
Those decisions will now be made amid a significant front-office transition. Brown’s responsibilities have been divided among assistant general managers Charles Cook, Gavin Dickey, and Connor Huff and senior adviser Jeff Bagwell, with Crane overseeing baseball operations.
Crane said the Astros’ recent skid did not prompt the decision to part ways with Brown. Houston had lost nine of 14 entering Tuesday, including six of eight during a disastrous homestand against the Mariners, Angels, and Athletics.
“That didn’t have anything to do with it,” Crane said.
For Now, Espada Is Still the Manager
What happens beyond this season remains an open question. Houston needs a new general manager, and whoever ultimately takes that job could have significant input into who manages the club in 2027.
But one part of the story is considerably clearer than it was Monday.
Nightengale reported that Espada had already been told his Astros tenure would end after this season. Rome’s sources disputed it. Now Crane has done so publicly.
Whether Espada earns another contract will apparently be decided later. For the rest of the season, the job is still his.
