TORONTO — A promising start for the Houston Astros turned into a gut-wrenching loss Tuesday night as the Toronto Blue Jays mounted a late-game rally, eventually walking off with a 4-3 victory in the 10th inning at Rogers Centre. The defeat snapped the Astros’ winning streak and marked a disappointing start to their three-game series in Toronto.
The Astros initially appeared to be in control, taking an early 3-1 lead thanks to a two-run home run by Carlos Correa. The offense was humming, collecting 11 hits throughout the game, with Yordan Alvarez contributing three hits and Yainer Diaz adding a key RBI double that scored Jose Altuve. Jeremy Peña also made a fantastic sliding catch in the second inning to help keep the Blue Jays off the scoreboard early.
However, the game took a dramatic turn in the bottom of the ninth inning. With Bryan Abreu on the mound, the Blue Jays loaded the bases with a combination of walks and a single. Isiah Kiner-Falefa then delivered a clutch, game-tying single to left field. The ball was misplayed by Mauricio Dubón, allowing two runs to score and sending the game into extra innings.
In the bottom of the 10th, the Blue Jays, with the automatic runner on second base, capitalized on the opportunity. With one out, Tyler Heineman hit a ground ball to first base. The throw home was not in time to get the speedy Myles Straw, who scored the winning run, sealing the walk-off victory for Toronto.
Despite the loss, which brings their record to 78-63, the Astros still hold the top spot in the AL West, with a narrow 1.0-game lead over the second-place Mariners. This tough defeat, the fourth in the Astros’ last five games, is a difficult pill to swallow for a team fighting to maintain their position at the top of the division. The Astros will look to bounce back in the next game and salvage a win in the series.
