ANAHEIM, CA – June 22, 2025 – The Houston Astros clinched their road series against the Los Angeles Angels yesterday, prevailing in a thrilling 8-7 victory at Angels Stadium. Mauricio Dubón led the charge with two home runs, powering an Astros offense that delivered 13 hits.
Astros starter Ryan Gusto (5-3) earned the win, despite giving up five runs on six hits in six innings, striking out seven. Josh Hader (S, 19) recorded his 19th save, closing out the game. For the Angels, Kyle Hendricks (3-7) took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits over five innings.
The Angels got on the board first in the bottom of the fourth inning when Logan O’Hoppe hit a two-run home run, giving them a 2-0 lead.
The Astros responded with a powerful fifth inning, scoring four runs to take the lead. Mauricio Dubón started the rally with a solo home run, his fourth of the season. Jeremy Peña followed immediately with a solo shot of his own, his 11th. After a Cam Smith single and a fielding error that scored Jake Meyers, Christian Walker doubled to drive in another run, putting the Astros up 4-2.
However, the Angels quickly retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Nolan Schanuel blasted a three-run home run off Ryan Gusto, making it 5-4 Angels.
Houston’s offense didn’t let up. In the top of the sixth, they put up another four runs. Mauricio Dubón hit his second home run of the game, a two-run shot, giving the Astros a 6-5 lead. Jeremy Peña then hit an RBI double, and Jake Meyers added a sacrifice fly, extending Houston’s advantage to 8-5.
The Angels chipped away at the lead in the later innings. Nolan Schanuel singled in a run in the bottom of the seventh, making it 8-6. In the bottom of the ninth, Zach Neto hit a solo home run off Josh Hader, bringing the Angels within one run at 8-7, but Hader managed to close out the game, including retiring Mike Trout, to secure the victory.
Mauricio Dubón finished 2-for-4 with two homers and three RBIs. Jeremy Peña also had a strong game, going 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBIs. The Astros collected 13 hits in total.
The thrilling victory improved the Astros’ record to 45-33 and allowed them to win the series against the Angels 2-1.
