Astros Complete 22-Player Draft Class
The Houston Astros closed out the 2026 MLB Draft on Sunday with a 22-player class anchored by two first-round college performers, a pair of prep infielders and a run of college arms and senior signs that filled out the back half of their 20 rounds.
Houston entered the weekend with extra draft capital thanks to Hunter Brown’s third-place finish in AL Cy Young voting, which triggered a Prospect Promotion Incentive pick, along with a compensation selection for the loss of Framber Valdez in free agency. The Astros used that capital early, taking Texas Tech outfielder Logan Hughes at No. 17 overall and Notre Dame right-hander Jack Radel with the PPI pick at No. 28 to open the first round. Florida State left-hander Wes Mendes followed at No. 57 in the second round, giving Houston three college performers with advanced feel before turning to the prep ranks.
The Astros stayed on the infield for two of their next three selections, taking Georgia high school shortstop Keon Johnson in the third round and Missouri shortstop Kam Durnin in the fourth. Their compensation pick for Valdez went to Kansas prep third baseman Beau Peterson, whom the organization is expected to sign to an over-slot deal alongside Johnson.
Day two brought a heavy college lean, starting with Cal right-hander Gavin Eddy in the fifth round. Houston then moved into a run of senior and older college signs typical of the middle rounds, adding right-handers Michael Addari (Illinois State) and Bryan Carney (University of Olivet) in the sixth and seventh rounds, Troy shortstop Aaron Piasecki in the eighth, and USF outfielder Ryan Pruitt in the ninth. Kansas State right-hander Tazwell Butler closed out the top 10 rounds, the cutoff point where signing bonuses stop counting against the team’s bonus pool.
The Astros continued adding arms and infielders through the back half of the class: right-hander Peyton Fiene, out of Odessa College, in the 11th round, Middle Tennessee State outfielder Owen Nowak in the 12th, Tennessee prep shortstop Jack Beck out of Columbia Central High School in the 13th, and Jacksonville State right-hander Brady Thomas in the 14th. California prep shortstop James Tronstein, out of Harvard-Westlake High School, went in the 15th round, followed by Texas State catcher Rashawn Galloway in the 16th.
Houston closed the draft with four more college players: Dallas Baptist infielder Ben Tryon in the 17th round, Utah Tech shortstop Petey Soto Jr. in the 18th, Michigan catcher Noah Miller in the 19th and Western Kentucky right-hander Mick Uebelhor with the Astros’ final selection in the 20th round.
Houston’s total bonus pool for the class sits at $13,712,700, the 11th-highest allotment among the 30 clubs, giving the front office some room to work with as it looks to sign multiple prep players above their assigned slot values. Clubs have until 5 p.m. ET on Monday, July 27, to finalize deals with picks from four-year colleges and high schools before those selections’ rights expire.
With the draft complete, attention now turns to signing the class, particularly prep standouts Beau Peterson and Keon Johnson, whose over-slot bonuses will be key to completing the Astros’ 2026 draft haul.
