ANAHEIM, CA – June 20, 2025 – The Houston Astros kicked off their road series at Angels Stadium with a dramatic 3-2 extra-inning victory over the Los Angeles Angels last night. Mauricio Dubón scored the winning run on a wild pitch in the 10th inning, giving the Astros the win in the opener.
Astros starter Hunter Brown received a no-decision despite a solid outing, pitching five innings and allowing just one run on two hits while striking out four. The win went to closer Josh Hader (5-1), who pitched a scoreless 10th inning. For the Angels, Yusei Kikuchi was strong in his start, giving up two runs over seven innings. Hunter Strickland (1-1) took the loss, allowing the unearned winning run in the 10th.
The Astros wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first inning. Jeremy Peña led off the game with a solo home run to center field, his 10th of the season. Immediately after, Isaac Paredes followed with a solo home run to left field, his 16th, giving Houston a quick 2-0 lead.
The Angels responded in the bottom of the fourth when Jo Adell hit a solo home run off Hunter Brown, cutting the Astros’ lead to 2-1.
The game remained tight, and the Angels managed to tie it up in the bottom of the seventh. Christian Moore hit a solo home run off Astros reliever Bryan King, evening the score at 2-2.
The game remained knotted through the ninth, sending it to extra innings. In the top of the 10th, with Mauricio Dubón placed on second base as the automatic runner, Jeremy Peña led off with a single, advancing Dubón to third. Then, with Isaac Paredes at the plate, Hunter Strickland threw a wild pitch, allowing Dubón to race home from third for the winning run.
Astros center fielder Jake Meyers made a spectacular full-extension diving catch in the bottom of the eighth to preserve the tie, a crucial defensive play.
The victory improved the Astros’ record to 44-32 and gave them a 1-0 lead in the three-game series against the Angels.
