Jeremy Pena Placed on Injured List with Calf Strain

The Houston Astros placed shortstop Jeremy Peña on the injured list Monday with a mild left calf strain. Peña arrived at Daikin Park with what manager Joe Espada described as “a little leg discomfort” and was held out of the lineup before the move was made official.

“It’s going to be a hopefully minimal IL stint,” Espada said. “Hopefully, he won’t take long to get back.”

It is the second leg injury of the season for Peña, who missed more than a month earlier this year with a Grade 1 right hamstring strain and dealt with a right hamstring cramp last week in Toronto. He played through that cramp during a stretch in which the Astros went 5-2, going 9-for-24 with three RBIs and three stolen bases.

Peña is hitting .295 with a .799 OPS this season, both his second-best marks since his All-Star 2025 campaign.

Nick Allen, activated earlier Monday from his own IL stint for a left hamstring strain, started at shortstop in Peña’s place. Jose Altuve moved into the leadoff spot, hitting at the top of the order for just the fourth time this month.
