CLEVELAND, OH – June 7, 2025 – The Houston Astros secured a hard-fought 5-3 extra-inning victory over the Cleveland Guardians last night at Progressive Field, clinching their three-game road series. A late-game rally by the Guardians pushed it to extras, but the Astros found a way to win.
Astros starter Hunter Brown received a no-decision despite a solid outing, giving up three runs on six hits over six innings while striking out nine. The win went to reliever Josh Hader (2-0), who pitched a scoreless ninth. Bennett Sousa (1st save) closed out the tenth for his first save of the season. For the Guardians, starter Gavin Williams gave up three runs on five hits over six innings. The loss went to reliever Hunter Gaddis (0-1).
The Astros broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning. Jeremy Peña singled to score Yainer Díaz, giving Houston a 1-0 lead.
They extended their lead in the top of the sixth when Yainer Díaz launched a two-run home run to left field, his eighth of the season, scoring Victor Caratini and putting the Astros up 3-0.
However, the Guardians began to chip away. In the bottom of the sixth, Gabriel Arias hit an RBI single, cutting the lead to 3-1. Then, in the bottom of the seventh, José Ramírez tied the game with a two-run home run to right field, his 12th of the season, making it 3-3.
The game remained tied through the ninth, sending it to extra innings. In the top of the tenth, with Jacob Melton starting on second base due to the extra-innings rule, Jake Meyers scored on a wild pitch by Guardians reliever Hunter Gaddis, giving the Astros a 4-3 lead. Isaac Paredes then singled to right field, scoring Jacob Melton and providing an insurance run, making it 5-3.
Bennett Sousa came in to close it out in the bottom of the tenth, securing the win despite allowing a walk.
The win improved the Astros’ record to 36-28, giving them their fourth straight victory and their third consecutive series win on the road.
