HOUSTON, TX – April 1, 2025 – The Houston Astros struggled to generate offense, falling 3-1 to the San Francisco Giants at Minute Maid Park on Tuesday night. Despite a valiant effort from their pitching staff, the Astros couldn’t overcome an early deficit as their new-look lineup continues to find its rhythm.
Giants ace Logan Webb (1-0) delivered a masterful performance, pitching seven strong innings. He held the Astros to just one run and five hits, tallying six strikeouts without issuing a walk to earn his first win of the season.
The Giants offense broke through against Astros starter Hayden Wesneski (0-1). In his Astros debut, the Houston native and former Cy-Fair High School and Sam Houston State standout allowed three runs and two hits in five innings, striking out six and walking three, ultimately taking the loss. The Giants’ scoring came courtesy of Willy Adames, who hit a crucial two-run double down the left-field line, scoring Christian Koss and Patrick Bailey. Heliot Ramos later added a solo home run, his third of the year, providing all the run support Webb would need.
Houston’s lone run of the night came in the bottom of the fourth inning when José Altuve launched his first home run of the year to the left-field Crawford Boxes.
Giants reliever Ryan Walker pitched a scoreless ninth inning to secure his second save of the season, closing out the game.
The Astros had a glimmer of hope in the eighth inning, with Altuve representing the potential go-ahead run. However, he hit a blooper to shallow right field that was caught by first baseman Casey Schmitt, ending the inning and squashing the rally.
The loss also broke a notable streak for the Astros, who had previously won six straight games on April Fool’s Day and hadn’t lost on April 1 since opening day 2011 at Philadelphia.
The Astros’ offense continues to face challenges, having scored more than two runs just once in their first five games with a new lineup that saw the departure of All-Stars Kyle Tucker and Alex Bregman in the offseason.
